How Long Should Facebook Ad Copy Be? (Short vs Long, Decided)

When short ad copy wins, when long copy earns its length, and a simple decision rule based on price, consideration, and audience temperature.

July 6, 2026·3 min read

The evidence-backed answer: ad copy should be as long as the purchase decision requires and no longer. Impulse-priced products (under roughly $50) convert best with 1–3 tight lines; considered purchases earn longer copy that pre-answers objections; and audience temperature bends both rules, because warm audiences need less convincing than strangers. The real mistake is not a wrong length but a mismatched one.

The decision rule

Ask two questions:

  1. How much deliberation does the price trigger? A $18 candle is decided in the feed; a $240 rug is decided across tabs, reviews, and a partner's opinion.
  2. How warm is the audience? Retargeting viewers who visited the product page yesterday need a nudge, not an essay.
Cold audience Warm audience
Impulse price 1–3 lines, one idea One line, recognition cue
Considered price Longer copy, objections handled Short, the specific unfinished objection

Why short wins for impulse products

Feed decisions for low-risk products are emotional and fast; every extra line is a chance to add doubt where none existed. The winning short copy makes one specific claim ("57-hour burn, counted") and hands off to the page. If a $20 product needs six paragraphs, the creative is not doing its job (creative principles).

Why long earns its place for considered purchases

For higher prices, the buyer's objections are the purchase path: is it durable, what if it doesn't fit, who else bought it, why this brand. Long copy that walks those objections in the buyer's own order replaces the research they would do anyway, on your terms. The structure that works:

  1. Hook line that names the buyer or the problem
  2. The mechanism (why the product delivers)
  3. The main objection, answered honestly
  4. Social proof with a scene in it
  5. The offer and the close

The "See more" fold is your real deadline

Whatever the total length, Meta truncates primary text after roughly 2–3 lines in feed. The visible portion must work alone: hook plus one complete idea. Everything after the fold is for the already-interested, which is exactly why long copy can be long without cost; the uninterested never expand it.

How to test length honestly

Run the same creative with a 2-line and a 10-line copy against the same audience for a week. Judge on cost per purchase, not click-through: short copy often wins clicks while long copy wins buyers, because long copy pre-qualifies. This asymmetry is the most common misread in copy testing.

Frequently asked questions

Is short or long ad copy better for Facebook ads?

Neither universally: short suits impulse prices and warm audiences; long suits considered purchases and cold audiences. Match length to the deliberation the purchase actually triggers, and judge tests on cost per purchase rather than clicks.

How much of my ad copy is visible before "See more"?

Roughly the first 2–3 lines in most feed placements. Write the visible portion as a complete unit: hook plus one idea, able to convert on its own.

Does long ad copy hurt performance?

Not when the price justifies it; the uninterested never expand it, and the interested read exactly what they needed. Long copy hurts when pasted onto impulse products, where it manufactures doubt.

Should retargeting ads use shorter copy?

Usually, yes. Warm audiences carry context; the copy's job narrows to the specific unfinished objection (shipping, size, the offer). One or two precise lines outperform re-pitching the whole product.

How many copy lengths should I test?

Two, meaningfully different (a tight version and a full version), on your proven creative. More gradations than that measure noise at small-store spend levels.
